Mandatory BRP Registration and BSN Assignment in the Netherlands
Anyone residing, working, or studying in the Netherlands for longer than 4 months is legally required to register in the Dutch Personal Records Database (BRP) at their local municipality (Gemeente). Upon registration, the Dutch authorities issue a citizen service number (BSN – Burgerservicenummer), which is essential for opening a Dutch bank account, signing employment contracts, obtaining compulsory Dutch health insurance, and renting accommodation.
Dutch Municipal Requirements: Two-Tier Apostille & English Translation
Dutch municipalities strictly require an official civil registry birth certificate with the international Hague Apostille. Furthermore, Dutch authorities require a certified court translation into English (or Dutch) bound with tricolor ribbon, as well as a secondary Apostille certificate authenticated directly on the sworn translation itself. Without both Apostilles, Dutch Gemeente offices will reject the submission and withhold BSN assignment.
